What the app asks for
- Server
- A name or address, such as example.com or 192.168.1.20. No sftp:// in front.
- User and password
- Your account on the server. If you log in with an SSH key, the app can use the keys held by your Mac’s SSH agent.
- Port
- 22 unless your server uses another. A Hetzner Storage Box uses 23.
Turn SSH or SFTP on first. On a Synology it is Control Panel, Terminal & SNMP, Enable SSH service.
Use a user that is limited to the folders you need. If you log in with a key, add it to your Mac’s SSH agent with ssh-add.
Good to know
- Away from home, connect your VPN first if the server sits on a home network.
- Names can be up to 255 characters.
- Capital letters in names depend on the server.
- Files stay on your server and take no room on your Mac until you open them.
