DriveMyMac

How to use DriveMyMac.

Eight short steps, from install to a new Mac.

Install and paste your key.

Open the app you downloaded. When it asks, paste the license key from your email.

Your key is also on the page you land on after paying. No account needed.

The app asks for the license key, then moves on to turning the drive on.

Turn on the drive.

macOS needs one switch. Click Open System Settings in the app, or go to System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → File System Extensions → DriveMyMac and switch it on.

The app moves on by itself once it is on. Step by step, with screenshots.

The app's enable step, then its "Your drive is ready" screen.

Add a storage.

Pick Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, S3, a NAS or another one, then sign in or enter its details.

Your login stays in this Mac's Keychain. The Mac talks straight to your storage.

A storage is chosen from the list, its details are filled in and the connection is checked.

Use it in Finder.

DriveMyMac shows up as a drive in Finder and in every app's Open and Save windows.

Files open on demand and take no space on your Mac until you open them. Choose Open in Finder in the app to jump there.

Top-level folders, one per storage or space, can't be deleted in Finder. To remove one, open the app, click … on it and choose Remove.

The drive screen lists every storage, each one a folder in Finder.

Merge into one folder.

A space joins storages into one folder. Two clouds of 2 TB each work like one 4 TB folder.

When you add a storage, choose Part of one drive. New files go to the storage with the most free space.

To undo it, click … on the space and choose Delete space. Its storages go back to their own folders and your files stay where they are.

Storages are joined into one space, and the space's panel lists them.

Free up space on your Mac.

In the app, choose Free up space. It looks through your Mac for big files you haven't opened in months and moves them into your cloud. The originals go to the Trash.

In Finder, right-click a file and choose Remove from this Mac (keep in cloud). It stays in your cloud.

Choose Keep on this Mac for files you need offline. Move to DriveMyMac copies a file in, then moves the original to the Trash.

To let Free up space look through all your folders without asking each time, allow disk access.

Free up space looks for big old files and moves them into the cloud.

Move to a new Mac.

One key works on one Mac at a time. On the old Mac open Settings and choose Remove from this Mac. Then paste the key on the new one.

Lost the old Mac? Email support@drivemymac.app and we free the key.

Settings with Remove from this Mac, then the key screen where the new Mac takes the key.

When something is wrong.

After a restart or wake, a storage may take a moment to reconnect. The app shows Waiting for the storage’s name… and Checking N storages while it does.

If it says Sign in again, sign in again. If a storage on your home network can't be reached, the app asks: Is it on? On another network, connect your VPN. If a NAS is asleep, wake it and the drive picks it up.

Offline, your kept files still open, and the app keeps working for 30 days after its last check. After that it locks until you are online.

A storage that needs Sign in again, one that can't be reached, and one that is being checked.
